What’s my California Delicious? Wine-tasting in Murphys

In the first of our series “What is Your California Delicious?”, a visit to picturesque Murphys was in order by California Delicious staffer, Andrea.

Tucked away in the Sierra foothills, is a true California Delicious destination point- the small, charming and historic town of Murphys.  Recently profiled in VIA magazine, Murphys has become known for more than it’s gold mining history and is now chock full of tasting rooms, boutiques and a variety of restaurants that this California Delicious reporter was ready to explore!

The weather was hot, hot, HOT! Probably a shade under 100 degrees, so the air conditioned Hovey Winery tasting room at 350 A Main Street was a welcome stopping point. Set in the historic 1850 Albert Michelson home, this delightful setting features a contemporary wine bar and small bistro tables inside, and a big grassy lawn and wood tables outside- perfect for an impromptu picnic lunch. Hovey Winery is a newer winery – the first wine having been introduced in 2008- but we were very impressed with our tasting. Favorite wines (and we backed this up with purchases!) include the 2012 Barbera “Walker Cuvee” for $22 and the 2010 Dragone Ranch Zinfandel, also for $22. Very California Delicious! Check out their website if you are planning to head up http://www.hoveywine.com/

Just up the street, still on Main and located in an old Flying A gas station is the Milliaire Winery Tasting room- Again, air conditioning (I’m telling you, it gets HOT up there!) and friendly staff make this a great tasting experience. Enjoy the full tasting, but if you are a red wine drinker, the 2009 Ghirardelli Zinfandel is my California Delicious at $30 a bottle.

Wow…I think I need a glass of wine, and I haven’t even gotten to the food yet. Does anyone have any personal recommendations for great places to eat in Murphys? We’d love to hear about your food experiences in this great little town- What’s your California Delicious?
