What’s My California Delicious? Fly-Fishing in North Lake Tahoe, California

Guest Blogger and California resident Janice Avalone tells us about her new found passion for fly fishing….

Recently on vacation in Tahoe with a close girlfriend, I was introduced to fly fishing. Before our experience this activity would not have been on my top ten things to do while relaxing on summer vacation. Just to let you know it has moved to the top and I am imagining a fly fishing vacation in my future.

The Resort at Squaw Creek is nestled into the mountainside at the base of Squaw Ski Resort where Matt Heron’s Fly Fishing company is based. In between the golf course and the pool facilities sits a round domed building and adjacent is a pond filled with rainbow trout. Matt, the owner, has been fishing his entire life and has a passion for teaching others the sport.

Fly Fishing Discovery Center offers a wide array of beginning to advance classes in addition to guided fishing trips. We signed up for the “Cast N’Catch”, a 3-hour course that entailed a comprehensive lesson, practice, and plenty of time for fly fishing in the pond. There were four in our group three women and one male, all beginners. Matt’s positive and kind personality put us all at ease and it was not long before we were all casting like experts!

We all caught fish, but most of all we enjoyed the beautiful setting and the experience of learning a new art. I would definitely recommend this activity to all age groups at the Squaw Resort. Remember to ask for Matt Heron.
