Marketing assistant Maya shares her experiences taking her mother on a trip to the shores of North Lake Tahoe, California…
My mother was visiting from out of town and expressed a strong desire to visit Lake Tahoe- as she had never been before and heard so much praise from her ski-obsessed daughter. I looked around for modestly priced lakeside hotels and finally found Mourelatos Lakeside Resort.
We arrived just before the sunset and made ourselves very comfortable on the beach lounge chair. We had brought some delicious Gloria Ferrer sparkling wine and popped the bottle open as we enjoyed the view.
Even though the light was fading fast. it was easy to see that I had chosen the right hotel! The views were epic- vast and clear sight lines across the lake and we decided to enjoy the lake the next day.
We were excited to see our room as it was specifically a “lakeview” room- the views were not as great from within the room, but who wants to spend time inside your room anyway?!
At check-in, we were warned there was a wedding happening- it seemed to be a beautiful set-up in the parking lot (hard to believe) and the noise and music stopped at 10pm as promised so we were happy!
We went off to explore the hotel grounds and found this gorgeous little ice cream shop. With its vintage signs shining in the moonlight, we vowed to return after finding a good spot for dinner.
The intimate dining room was filled with hotel guest mainly, but we managed to find a small table and started off with some vino.
I chose this Pinot Noir by La Follette, an emerging vineyard I had heard of through work. It was pretty delicious. After a long day of travelling, it the perfect balance of flavors and soft drinkability that made it very easy to finish.
We paired the wine with their famous bacon, goats cheese flatbread which was a great appetizer for two hungry wine-drinking women!
We also had some fresh bread which was warm and crunchy and everything fresh bread should be- but more notably- was their signature black pepper/peppercorn butter which was full of flavor and despite being overwhelmingly peppery- really amazing (highly recommended to anyone who enjoys strong black pepper flavors).
We both ordered their steak salad which was a modest-sized portion, was meat heavy dressing and freshness of the greens were perfect!
Sadly the ice cream joint was closed when we returned so we had an early night in anticipation of a fun day on the lake.
I was so excited to try Stand Up Paddle boarding for the first time. My mother, who was a bit more apprehensive, opted for a one-person kayak- both of which were rented free of charge from the Mourelatos Resort.
It was a great day out on the lake , there were lots of people out enjoying the crystal clear waters- on jet skis, small sailing boats, paddle boards, peddle boats and some rambunctious kids enjoying the mid-lake trampolines.
As the sun started to fade, our mood relaxed and we took up our post on the beach, exhausted from playing in the lake and mesmerized by the beautiful sunsets in our “front yard”…

It was the perfect getaway for my mother and I- living in a busy bustling Bay Area city, it is easy for me to forget how close by paradise can be found. And my mother, who had never visited Tahoe, was astounded and wowed every where we went.
If you have never visited Lake Tahoe in the summer- you must! And if you have the chance to stay at the amazingly located, family-owned and charmingly managed Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort– you must!
The family and staff members were always very helpful , happy and seemed genuinely interested in our having a good time. Thanks to the Mourelatos family- we will be back!
