When you think of Ireland in March, I’m sure surfers and palm trees don’t come to mind but San Diego’s St Patrick’s Day parade is the city’s largest parade. Kicking off bright and early, this parade has over 120 entries including “includes Marching Bands, Floats, Police and Fire Department units, the Emerald Societies, Clowns, equestrian entries, Border Patrol units, Scout Troops, bagpipe contingents, dancing groups, drill teams, roller skaters, antique cars, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, representatives from Ireland, and the reigning Miss Colleen and Smiling Irishman. ” With awesome events such as the Smiling Irishman competition, this is definitely one of our top places to celebrate St.Patrick’s Day in California.

According to Yahoo, SF’s celebration of this Saints day is one of the longest St Patrick’s Day traditions in the state. And with over 1 million Irish descendants in the SF Bay Area, this 2 day long event is bound to be busy! Venture towards Irish bars in the downtown, North Beach area and you’ll find many festive grownups enjoying block parties- these festivities are definitely not  kid friendly unless you enjoy losing your children in large crowds….For a more traditional and family friendly vibe, head to Civic Center and watch the parade and festivities there including live music, dancing and traditional Irish fare!

Murphys Irish Day

Every year, thousands of people meet up in the historic gold town of Murphys and celebrate the rich Celtic culture that exists there and int eh surrounding area. Murphy’s Irish Day is a fundraiser for lots of community projects and local non-profits so its a great excuse to celebrate in the street for a good cause! “The day begins with a pancake breakfast.  At 11 a.m. the swirl of bagpipes heralds a parade of marching bands, classic cars, horses, community organizations, novelty entries, and some of the finest children in the land. Throughout the day, there is continuous entertainment featuring singers, dancers, musicians, and jugglers.  There are pony rides for the young ones and Renaissance actors encamped in the park. “-  And if you’ve never been to Murphys, this is your chance- Not many can resist this charming festival in this charming town!
