Irie Fuse on stage

Opening night featured the sound of Marin based band IrieFuse who got the crowd on their feet almost immediately with their reggae rhythms and their infectious enthusiasm. A local restaurant The Baltic served up wine and beer plus some concert fare from their kitchens.  The 300 plus attendees included locals as well people who had ventured to town for a bit of music to kick-off their weekend. Kids listened to the music while chalking colorful pictures on the sidewalk.

Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic playing on stage

Next up was Bay Area legend Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic. Andre has been an important figure in preserving the Creole Zydeco culture which was brought to Richmond during WWII. He was recently honored by the City of Richmond with the Historic Preservation award for keeping zydeco alive. Sitting down was not an option for this set.  Zydeco is a blend of Cajun music, blues and R&B. The music charged up the crowd who were dancing in the streets while the sun began to set over the Golden Gate.
