Ten days of non-stop films came to a close on Sunday evening with the Closing Night Tribute to actor Ben Stiller and a Sneak Preview of his upcoming film “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”. There was the buzz of excitement in downtown Mill Valley at the Sequoia Theater. A mini red-carpet with the attendant paparazzi awaited the arrival of Ben Stiller, who directed and stars in the closing night film.

I could only get an over my head shot as he stopped to speak with journalists. Once inside the theater we were treated to a brief Q&A with Stiller and Festival Director Mark Fishkin. Stiller seemed like a genuinely down to earth nice guy with a great sense of humor. He had just finished making Walter Mitty and was enthused to watch it with the crowd. I love, love, loved the film. It was sweet, funny and has the makings of being an instant classic. Kristen Wiig stars opposite Stiller as a co-worker at Life Magazine. The film is true in spirit to the classic James Thurber story upon which it is based. Go see it when it is released on December 25-you and your family will love it!

After the movies -off to the party. A quick drive to San Rafael to the Maple Lawn Estate at the Elks Lodge transported us to an A-List Gathering a la Hollywood.  The estate is magnificent with beautiful grounds. The 500 plus guests were treated to food from an array of Festival sponsors including Sol Foods, Theresa and Johnny’s and West End Cafe. Martinis flowed in the Drake Room and there was live music on the terrace.  I had to sneak away before 10PM because it was a “school” night but by all indications the party would be rocking late into the night.

We were so thrilled to be a part of the festival and a part of supporting the arts in our community.
