Summer is officially here! Finally! To celebrate the longest day of the year, it is only appropriate to celebrate a tradition that pairs perfectly with long summer nights— drinking delicious micro-brews and craft beers al fresco (outside).
With the coming of summer, brings new establishments. The new ones have created a local buzz and the existing ones have had a buzz about them for a while, so I will feature 5 new and not so new of the best beer gardens on the best side of the San Francisco Bay!
Beer Garden and Burger Joint? What a perfect replacement for the dearly departed “Raleighs” or “Mannys”- which name you use depends on which year you graduated Cal.
This place has a really open outdoor space which is reminiscent of the tradition Texas ice-house and has both a roof and gas heaters for the more extreme weather situations. The beers range from local micro brews to international ciders and the different selections are displayed quaintly on little hanging chalkboards within picture frames –a unique and cute way to format a menu. In true Berkeley fashion, you can order Vegan Buffalo wings and Veggie Burgers or Moroccan Lamb Burgers and Truffle Fries for the more gluttonous food enjoyer. Everyone can be a happy camper here!
Moxy Beer Garden

A self proclaimed “Beer Garden, Art Gallery and Restaurant”- what more could you want in sunny Oakland? Even though it only opens at 11am, it serves breakfast and explains this with a mantra I truly believe in: “Breakfast is always appropriate, & at Telegraph, we’re serving it all day.” There is also a whole menu dedicated to Sausage Sandwiches, which is also right up my alley. Their beer menu offers over 15 choices but it unclear whether these are in bottles or on draft (it makes a difference!). Open since 2012, they have recently renovated their patio area which is now perfect for all weather conditions.

What a name! And so new, this place literally opened last week and so I’ve yet to check it out- but I am already impressed. A great selection of California and Belgian brews and constant rotation is promised which shows that the Brotzeit guys are committed to finding the best beers around. With 18 taps running, that’s a lot of beers to try this summer. Lucky this place is located on the Oakland Embarcadero- beautiful bay views- This may be my new summer spot. And the fare fairs well too- Sausages, Schnitzels and Mussels- it’s a little slice of Belgium in Oakland.

My love affair with this place has withstood many big life changes and has remained a solid and reliable companion since I started at Cal in 2009. This place is often overrun with students but as Summer is here (and the population of Berkeley has been severely depleted) this place is awesome again. Definitely go on a Thursday night for the Monkey Head night- a delicious brew that is only available on Thursdays and sometimes only before 9pm as it often sells out. The food is great, I love the Mac and Cheese with Tasso Ham but the burgers are also delicious. The staff are freakish happy to be at work and in turn, the service is always good. Their sundeck is a great place to hang with friends but most importantly, their hot sauce collection is the best I’ve seen (in a public place). Enough Said.
Triple Rock Brewery and Alehouse
1920 Shattuck Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94704
With 48 constantly rotating taps, I think this may be the most “serious” of the bunch. They also have “100′s” of bottles, all of which are priced To-Go but with an extra $1 charge, you can consumer them in their delightful beer garden. I love the communist theme than runs throughout this establishments from their Soviet-esque logo to their complete rejection of all “mainstream” brews. So no Bud light here. No worries- Their Facebook page is constantly cropping up new beers on tap into my newsfeed! So come on Comrades- Join the Beer Revolution this weekend!
